Dominican Beans (Habichuelas Guisadas)

Dominican beans are a staple in Dominican cuisine, known for their rich, creamy texture and flavorful seasoning. This hearty dish is usually served over white rice and paired with meats or fried plantains, making it a comforting and nourishing meal.

Ingredients:

2 cups red or pinto beans (cooked or canned),4 cups water (or broth),1 tablespoon vegetable oil, ½ onion (chopped), ½ bell pepper (chopped), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 teaspoon oregano, 1 teaspoon cumin (optional), 2 tablespoons tomato sauce or paste, 1 bouillon cube (chicken or vegetable, optional), 1 sprig cilantro, ½ teaspoon salt (to taste)

How to Cook:

  1. Sauté Aromatics – Heat oil in a pot, then add onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Cook until fragrant.
  2. Add Seasonings – Stir in oregano, cumin, and tomato sauce. Cook for a minute.
  3. Simmer Beans – Add the beans, water (or broth), bouillon cube, and cilantro. Stir and bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Thicken the Sauce – Mash some beans against the pot to create a creamy texture. Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Serve – Adjust seasoning if needed and serve over white rice for a classic Dominican meal.
